Biography

Claudia Appenzeller-Winterberger is the Secretary General of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences. She is a generalist and is fascinated by the interplay between science, management and communication. As a deputy division head at the Commission for Technology and Innovation, she focused on the growth and internationalisation of science-based start-up companies. She headed the interdepartmental Work and Care project at the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health and was involved in implementing the Swiss eHealth strategy. As their Director, she was in charge of the strategic positioning of the Swiss Scientific Olympiads. During six years, she built up her own business for text and communication, drawing on her experience as a media spokeswoman for the Special Delegate of the State Security Documents Bureau. As well as having a Master of Arts in Translation from the University of Geneva, Ms Appenzeller has an Executive Master of Public Administration from the University of Bern. She is married and has three adult sons. Ms Appenzeller-Winterberger promotes more active and interdisciplinary cooperation and dialogue with the aim of creating a shared basis for addressing challenges and valorising results.
